The House is Quiet

What a fun filled week I had, ya'll! The rain stopped us from going to Galveston so we had to go the mall instead. The girls wanted to go to the Build a Bear store. One got a puppy and one got another bear. They are so cute. I still needed to get daughter a birthday gift so we looked at clothes. Nothing 'worked'! We stopped in a store that sells oil and vinegar and all kinds of spices, seasonings and condiments. I bought some apple balsamic vinegar, olive oil and Sicilian dipping spices. You mix the spices with olive oil and dip your bread in it. Yum-o! I used the apple balsamic vinegar in a marinade for some country style pork ribs. Very tasty!

Later that evening, daughter and I hit another local mall, still in quest of clothes. We hit the jackpot! We found a cute skirt for her at Foley's. We made our way to Dillard's and found the same skirt, but it was 10.00 more than at Foley's....cha-ching! As we were looking for a top to go with the skirt, would you believe she found another skirt! It was a cute swirly hemmed denim. Of course, it needed just the right blouse too, which we found. Then, I found a cool looking white pant suit. Loved it! Got it, along with a bright orange tank! Ok, then I had to have shoes to go with it. I found some cork wedges, need I say more? Why does every outfit need it's own accessories? It's called 'The snowball effect'. One thing leads to another! We are two peas in a pod when it comes to shopping, my baby girl and I. I taught her well!

On Thursday we went to Old Town Spring and looked around all the little shops. I found a cute animal print harness for Elvis at a pet boutique. The girls spotted a cute shop called Libby Lulu's. It was decorated in bright pink with chandeliers and girly stuff all over the place. Lot's of hats, purses and jewelry. Son in law requested Wunsche Bros Cafe for lunch. They have killer burgers and onion rings!

The girls stayed with me on Friday while their Mom and Dad went fishing with PaPa. We went to the hair salon and I colored my friends' hair who was visiting from west Texas. I took the girls to lunch at Landry's Seafood, then we stopped at Toys R Us to look for a board game called Sequence. We ran in Wal-Mart for a few things, including Floam. The girls said it was neat to play with, so I did what any Memaw would do, I bought them each a pack of it. That kept them busy for the rest of the afternoon. They went to the movies that night to see Ice Age, the Meltdown.

Saturday was the Big Bar b Que. I made potato salad, beans, salsa and guacamole to go with the brisket, ribs and chicken. We made a 'Perfectly Chocolate chocolate cake' for dessert, garnished with fresh strawberries. The recipe is on the Hershey's cocoa can. It is the BEST chocolate cake you will ever eat! My sisters and nieces came over and we all sat around the table, eating and talking. The girls had fun getting re-acquainted with their second cousins.

As we were sitting there, having dessert and coffee, my daughter shared the most exciting news! She and her husband have made application to adopt a baby girl from China. She had already told me earlier and I got emotional all over again. I am so happy for them. They feel very strongly that this is God's will for them and their family at this time. I pray that He blesses them with their baby as soon as possible. The process takes about a year

So, tonight the house is quiet. Little Elvis has been looking for the girls all day. He had so much fun with them, and they loved playing with him. The remnants of a fun filled week are still strewn about. Games boxes are still on the table, empty build a bear boxes and shopping bags are in the bedroom. A forgotten pair of jeans in the laundry....but it's OK...It means that they were here. I will clean up and put things away later. Right now I just want to savor the sweet memories of the past week.

The Drama Continues

I spoke too soon, they came over after all. Son, DIL and kids, I mean. I was pleasantly surprised. I immediately gave J his birthday card containing $, apologized profusely, gave him a big kiss and hug and took pictures. After visiting a while, we went to lunch at La Cabana Mexican Restaurant. It was nice to see both my kids and their families together in one place. At the same time, it was kind of bittersweet, wondering how long it would be before we would all be together again. As we were waiting for our food my daughter 'teared up' when we talked about it. What a difference ten years can make! How did we end up this way? Once again, it's called 'life'!
We came back to my house and tried to teach the children how to play Yahtzee, then they all had to get ready to go back to their dad's and have family portraits made. The house is a wreck, but I don't care. It means that they are here, even if for just a short while. I want to savor every moment with them. I don't want to waste precious time dwelling on forgotten birthdays. My babies know that I love them and that's all that matters.
I am puppy sitting with Elvis' brother, Marty, my son's puppy. The two pups have been playing non-stop all day. I'd better go referee!

OK, so what's up with blogger? I have been trying for a week to upload pictures! I know some of my fellow bloggerites have had the same problem. What gives? GRRRR...Now I'm getting irritated!!!!!

So, how was your day? I went to church this morning just to sing in the choir. We sang an awesome song called 'Total Praise'. Everyone was totally into it..in both services. Wow! I had so much to do today that I snuck out after we sang. I still had to get some pillows for the new bedroom. I went to Ross to see what they had and found two nice ones for 5.99 each. I also found a dark green jaquard throw with fringe and a soft fleece blanket. I also wanted to finish hanging the swags I made for the kitchen windows. It all looks so nice, if I do say so myself! I'll post some pictures one of these days if blogger will co- operate.

Faith is so important to me. It's what keeps me going. So why do I get this knot in my stomach just about every Sunday morning? Why do I just want to get in my car and drive far away from here? It's all I can do to be civil to 'you know who' sometimes, the anger and disappointment are always just under the surface. When will it end? Why am I here? So many questions, but no answers.
Only God knows, I guess.

I hate being a drag, so I'll quit whining now. I'm going to concentrate on having fun with my kids this week. Can't wait to hug my babies and spend time with my sweet daughter.

I've decided to keep this blog name for now. I just haven't been inspired or creative enough to come up with another one, but I'm sure one day, or one night in my sleep, one will just pop into my mind. I'm sure that it will be so clever and appropriate that I will wonder why I didn't think of it sooner!

I am sitting at this computer at 4:00am Saturday morning! I was awakened by sirens about an hour ago and I can't get back to sleep. I will be dragging by the time I get off work this afternooon. I know I booked myself too tight and will probably run behind all day. Oh well, they will just have to take a number and wait! I hope Loretta brings a new crossword puzzle book with her, cuz she will need it. I have my clients spoiled anyway because I usually keep on schedule. I know hairdressers are notorious for keeping people waiting, but not me. It makes me crazy to have clients sitting and staring at their watches, waiting like nervous cats! However, today I don't care! I've had a slow week and I need to make some cash since I will be off all next week.

I will pick up daughter and her family at the airport bright and early Monday morning, then we will be off to a fun filled week! They will spend the first few days with her dad and his wife. My son and his family are coming in from big-D so all the cousins should have a good time getting re-acquainted. On Wednesday we are planning to go to Galveston for a few days. I haven't been there in years, because I always go to the beach with the kids when I'm in Florida. We are staying at a friends beach house, but probably won't go near the water because it's still too cold. We want to check out the new Schlitterbahn water park or Moody Gardens. There are a lot more restaurants along the seawall, too. Then, there's always The Strand for shopping and eating. I'm also planning a family get together next Saturday at my house. I even invited the ex and his wife and two little boys. It can be awkward sometimes because of underlying issues, but the most important thing is that my kids get to see everyone and spend time with all their family as much as possible in the short time that they are here.
Hope the weather co- operates!

I probably won't be blogging a whole lot next week either. In fact, I won't be able to get to the computer because all their stuff will be piled up in this bedroom!

I got the herbs planted yesterday after I got home from work. I made a new wreath for the front door, got plenty of food and Blue Bell ice cream...I'm ready for the crowd! Elvis won't know what to think when he sees the girls! I'm sure they will love him and he will be happy to have all that attention!

It's now 4:30 am. I think I'll take nap before I have to get up and get ready another fun day in the world of hair. Yeah right! I'm just gonna put myself on auto-pilot and go for it!

Crazy Weather & Stuff

Can you believe it's 36 degrees tonight? Last week I was turning on the A/C, now I'm cranking the heat back on! You know what they say about Houston weather..."If you don't like it, wait five minutes and it will change". I just hope it warms up by the weekend when the kids arrive. We are planning a day trip to Galveston sometime during the week. Warm weather would be nice.

Today I went to the plant place across the street from the shop and bought some herbs. I have a perfect location for an herb garden outside my kitchen windows. I found Italian oregano, lemon balm, rosemary, sweet basil, spearmint, peppermint and chives. I didn't get any parsley because it looked a little puny. I also like dill, but couldn't find any. I'll try to grow some from seed. I like to slice small pickling cucumbers and fresh tomatoes, add chopped dill, vinegar, salt and pepper and a little sugar. Let it all marinate at least an hour and served chilled. Yum! It will be so nice to have my own little bed of fresh herbs to cook with!

I haven't written about the world of hair lately...every one has been fairly easy to deal with...no weird stuff has happened to any one. Since I have had Elvis every one seems to want to talk about him and/or their own dog. I didn't realize so many people have dogs. Mini dachshund are very popular dogs apparently because I have heard lots of wiener dog stories. They are fun little dogs. I got in from work rather late tonight and Elvis was so glad to see me that he peed all over the floor! How cute!

I do stay busy at the salon, though. I had a new client come in on Tuesday for highlights. I didn't want to stay that late, but I just can't stand to turn down a new person. She was very happy with her new look and I got home just in time for American Idol!

Poor little Kevin Covais is history. I knew he was going to get the ax this week. I like Bucky, but I fear he will be the next one to bite the dust. Him or Lisa Tucker. And what about Kelly Pickler...Simon's naughty little 'minx'? Hmm?

Ya'll remember to keep Mike in your thoughts and prayers. His Mom is having some complications due to ongoing health problems.

Changes and Things

I'm thinking about changing the name of this blog. I just dreamed it up as I was setting this thing up and I've never been happy with it. I'm open to suggestions, so feel free to share.

I have been busy decorating the front bedroom and it is looking very pretty. I decided to go with a French Country garden theme, in colors of burgundy, mauve, soft green and taupe, picking up the colors of the floral spread and pillow shams. I didn't have time to paint the walls, but since I will be buying a new spread and shams eventually, I wanted to wait. I bought an unfinished ledge shelf at Michael's, painted it a soft green, then antiqued it. It will be hung in the computer corner, displaying pictures of the kids, etc. I still need a curtain rod and new lampshade for the beautiful crystal lamp that was a gift to my daughter when she got married. I brought the pair of lamps back with me the last time I visited. They didn't fit in her new home and I didn't particularly have a place for them either, but I wanted to keep them because of their sentimental value. Besides, they were quite an investment back when they were purchased!

As I look around this newly decorated room and see the gallery of my children and grandchildren's pictures, it reminds me of how quickly time has flown by. We have all been through many changes, some good, some not so good, but that is what life is all about, isn't it? There's not a person on this earth who, if given the opportunity, wouldn't go back and change some things along life's journey. Life truly is like a tapestry, our experiences woven together like so many different threads and textures. The pretty side is displayed for the world to see...the 'ugly' side, with all the knots and bumps, carefully hidden from view. No two are alike, but each one beautiful in it's own way, knots, bumps, tangles and all. And the best part is that God loves both sides! He forgives us when we knot things up and if we will allow him, He can make something beautiful from the tattered pieces.

Change happens,

Life goes on.

Let's Rodeo!

We went to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo last night at the Reliant Center. There were 57,946 people in attendance. This thing is huge! The entire city 'Goes Texan' during rodeo time, so we put on our boots and jeans and joined in the fun. We rode the shuttle bus to Reliant Center because the traffic is a b****. The commute to the park n ride lot where we caught the shuttle to the rodeo took almost an hour and a half, but at least I didn't have to drive all the way there and pay to park. Many of the local restaurants have food booths set up outside in the parking lot. Vendors of all kinds were set up in the exhibit hall. I didn't buy anything, but it was fun to look. The livestock exhibits and judging is in the back of the arena. After grabbing a quick bite to eat, we made our way into the rodeo arena and found our seats, just in time for the opening ceremonies. Cowboys with names like Howdy Cloud, Ty Elliot and Shay Good rode bulls, bucking broncos and wrestled steers. The calf scramble is always fun. A bunch of kids and about half as many calves are turned loose in the arena. They have to catch a calf, harness him and lead him into the center of the arena. They get a calf to keep and raise during the year.

However, the main attraction is the entertainment. This rodeo goes for the big names ya'll. Alan Jackson was the man of the hour and he was awesome! Chronicle correspondent Joey Guerra gave him a pretty favorable review in today's Houston Chronicle, except for the dig he made during a cover of Hank Williams Jr's Texas Women. He inserted the line, "I'm a Cowboy fan/Not a Brokeback man," which drew cheers from the crowd. Guerra criticized Jackson for the statement, but apparently the crowd agreed with Jackson. Ya think? I think Mr. Jackson has a right to his opinion, so there, Mr. Guerra! Alan Jackson is a class act as far as I'm concerned. BTW, this is his 14th year to perform at HLSR.

We (The Man and I) had a nice evening, all in all. Except for a few minor tangles, we got along pretty well. Go figure... you think he's turning over a new leaf? I remain cautiously optimistic.

Spring has Sprung in South Texas

The days are getting longer, so there was plenty of daylight left when we got home from work yesterday. We put the leash on Elvis and went for a walk 'out back'. The woods are coming alive with new growth. This little pond is full of water from the recent rains, which makes the frogs happy. They were croaking and chirping. In a nearby bog I saw wild irises and pretty marsh grasses. I even found dewberry vines in full bloom. I hope I get to the ripe berries before the critters do! The chickadees were flitting about, feeding on the tender new buds of the oak trees. There were lots of fresh deer tracks. After dark the night before, we spotted five does feeding in the open field to the left of the pond. These woods are home to all manner of wild life and plants. It makes me sad when I think about the day that they will be destroyed in the name of progress, to make way for more houses or businesses. The land where my home sits was once wooded, so it is only a matter of time before this little section of forest meets the same fate. I know that part of the land is a county easement and greenbelt designated for drainage and runoff. At least that will stay intact. However, the open field were the deer like to feed is for sale. It's frontage is on the four lane main thoroughfare, so it is a commercial tract. The woods to the right of the pond have been 'logged' recently. The pine trees have been removed and sold, probably to make more lumber, to build more houses! Oh well, I will enjoy it as long as it is here, meanwhile, I will plant my own forest. I started today by planting two pine saplings and an oak tree.

Of Spring and Decorating

Spring is right around the corner! Yay! I had to turn on the AC in my car today it was so warm. All the garden centers have put away the fire wood and chimaneas. Now they are abloom with colorful annuals, flowering shrubs and hanging baskets, just waiting to find a home. I admire them from afar because I know there will be another frost or two before spring actually arrives. I always wait until the end of April or first of May to put in my annuals, just to be on the safe side. I will go ahead and buy a few hanging baskets to spruce up the back porch, though. I wish I could just snap my fingers and have a beautifully landscaped back yard instead of the barren weed patch that is there now. I have had two beautiful back yards in previous homes, all planted by yours truly. Both of those yards would fit into this back yard that I have now! I even painted a mural on my storage shed in my last yard. It had a picket fence with daisies and ivy trailing on it, wisteria vine and a pink climbing rose on either side of the door. On the door I painted a wooden arch with more ivy, a hanging basket of asparagus fern, a bird house, a topiary and an herb garden growing in a wooden box. Across the top of the door I wrote: 'She Who Loves a Garden...' from a Mary Englebreight book. I painted little vines with tiny white flowers on the letters. I even painted a Monarch butterfly flitting amongst the flowers. I had milkweed growing nearby and always had Monarchs laying their eggs on it. Later I would see a huge green and black striped caterpillar eating every leaf in sight. Once I found a crysallis hanging from a nearby plant, but missed seeing the butterfly actually hatch. I loved that yard!

I have a lot to do in the next few weeks to get the house ready for 'the kids' visit. My daughter and her family are coming for a visit during their spring break the last week of March. I still need to furnish one of the bedrooms. I am buying a white trundle day bed from a friend to put in it. I want the room to be a 'girls room'. This will also by my office/computer room, so I don't want it too frilly...more bright and fun! The rest of the house is OK, still no window treatments in the family room or kitchen. I just haven't been in the mood to deal with all that, what with all the drama going on in the 'domestic situation'. It seems to be settling down a bit, so it looks like I will be staying around for a while. I might as well do a little more decorating. The house will at least 'show' well if it ever needs to be put on the market. In the meantime, I can enjoy it. Besides, I am, therefore I decorate!

Well, little Elvis is pooped. He had his puppy class this evening and had quite a work out, but he is learning all his commands and making friends with the other pups. The wild and crazy chocolate lab came back, darn it. He shreiked and slung slobber the entire time. The other pups had a hard time concentrating because he is such a distraction. I wonder if it would do any good to call the instructor and complain, er discuss my concerns.

Who Dressed the Dogs up?

I have a client who has a tea cup chihuahua about 2 years old. She takes the dog everywhere she goes. In fact, I met her at the nail salon last year about this time. I noticed the dog all bundled in a baby blanket on her lap as we were sitting next to one another getting our nails done. I commented on how cute he was and we started talking. She told me that she got the dog after her son was killed in car accident. She went on to tell about how the puppy had brought her comfort and helped fill a void as she went through the grieving process. She also suffers from lupus and is unable to work, so she and Peanut are inseparable. I believe the dog would grieve himself to death if anything ever happened to her. She was in today and as usual, brought 'Peanut' along. Well, this little guy was all decked out in a camouflage tank top and hat. He was wearing goggles that co-ordinated with his camo. He always wears a necklace ( which is really a ladies bracelet). He has quite an extensive wardrobe and is always dressed in a cute outfit.

It seems that the trendy thing to do these days is to dress your dog in cute outfits. So, should I buy Elvis a few t-shirts? What about a hat? On second thought, I don't think he would stand for a hat to be strapped to his head. He'd probably rip it off and tear it to shreds! He wears a tiny camouflage bandana around his neck sometimes, but I think a simple t-shirt would be OK too. I did make Elvis a cape and he tolerated it fairly well, but he hasn't worn it in public yet.

Peanut fills a need in my friends' life, as Elvis has done for me. So what if we put clothes on them. They love us unconditionally and tolerate our goofy behavior!

When I was a kid, we had lots of cats and kittens. My sister and I would put our doll clothes on the cats and pretend they were our babies. Or, sometimes we would just pretend that the cat was a baby wearing a 'kitty suit' if they wouldn't let us dress them up. Same principle, different era!

If Elvis doesn't like wearing clothes, I'll just pretend that he's a baby wearing a puppy suit. So there!

It's a beautiful thing, ya'll!

The atmosphere around this house has definitely changed since Elvis came along. I wasn't sure how the man would take to him when I brought him home, but let's just say that he loves that puppy! He can't wait to get home from work every day to see Elvis. He doesn't mind cleaning up after him either. The dog even sleeps with him. It's amazing the change in this guy. He told me Sunday that Elvis has brought 'joy to his heart and a smile to his face.'

The last several years have been very stressful for both of us...And still are at times. This sweet little puppy dog is just what we needed to lighten things up, I guess. It's hard to be in a bad mood or be depressed when this playful pup makes you laugh and play. I still feel the need to keep my distance, but at least we are able to talk, mainly about the 'baby', but at least it's a start.
I have heard and read about how having pets is good for you. They can be very therapeutic in many ways. Yes, Elvis is just what the doctor ordered.

I had to go to the shop and work some today, trying to catch up from being off sick last Thursday. I always end up staying longer that expected because I have a hard time saying 'no' to people. I took a little longer with one lady because one of her foils bled onto her scalp and made a spot. I had to put some color on it to make it blend in. That made me run late with my next client, then she wanted her lip and brows waxed. I got done about 3:30.

I went next door and see the girls at the insurance office and ended up hanging around there for 30 minutes chatting with them. We got onto one of our favorite subjects...men. We can really get on a roll when it comes to male bashing! Of course, it's all in fun ( yeah, right!) and we all feel better after venting to each other.

I just read Mad Ethel's post about smells. Now I can't stop thinking about how good blueberry muffins smell while they're baking or chocolate chip cookies or bread...why am I thinking about food smells at 10:00 pm ? I am the only person in the world who gains weight when they're sick because I can't stand to eat salads and grilled chicken breast when I don't feel good. I want carbs, lots of carbs, like french fries, rice and butter, pasta, toast and jelly, ice cream. The man brought home 4 boxes of girl scout cookies, which are a rip off, but I absolutely love the thin mints! I ate a whole box!

Oh Lordy, I need to cut this off and go to bed. I'll probably dream about junk food all night!

What a Week!

This has been one busy week, ya'll. Between working late, being sick and taking care of Elvis, I have hardly had time to check my e- mail, much less post an entry to this blog. I'm still trying to get over a sinus infection. The crummy weather we have been having has not helped. It has been rainy, cold and damp all week. I have been staying in when I'm not working because I hate getting out in the rain. Talk about a bad hair day! Elvis hates walking around on the cold, wet ground, too. I'm trying to train him to use the puppy floor pads, but it's been hit or miss, so to speak!
Elvis starts his puppy training this Monday evening. We have already been practicing walking on a leash. He seems to be 'getting it. We still need to work on not biting. He gets all excited when we play and starts nipping with those sharp little teeth. I just hope he doesn't freak out when he sees the other dogs. Especially the big ones. There are several labs and a yorkie about his size in the class. What fun!
I have been watching some of the Olympics, but I'm not as into it as I usually am. Chad Hedrick, the speed skater is from Spring, so it has been interesting to see a local boy win all those medals. Some of the people who come into the salon know his family.
The ratings probably went down when Michelle Kwan decided to drop out. They were probably counting on the competition/rivalry between her and Sasha Cohen to add some excitement. Then when Sasha fell, the ratings went with her. I'm sorry for her, but she did seem a little full of herself.

So, that's about all that has been going on in my world. Kind of boring, I know. I am beginning to get cabin fever, though. I will be so glad when I get to feeling better. Come on Spring!

Think I'll go cleanse and exfoliate my face, then do a mask. We seasoned women have to take care of our skin so we won't look all wrinkly and sh**!
Funny how we do all that stuff to look younger, but the men don't notice anyway, because they are all still looking for/at 20-30 year olds.
Weird!

Men can just grow a beard to hide all their wrinkles, the lucky dogs!

Strange Happenings

A woman walked into the salon Tuesday afternoon around 4:30 pm as I was finishing my last client. She looked very familiar to me and as we made eye contact, I said 'I know you'. She said 'I know you too'. We even recognized each other's names. I could tell from her black brief case and attire that she was a sales rep. I asked her to have a seat while I finished styling my clients' hair. I was racking my brain where I knew her from, but just couldn't put my finger on it.
She started showing me these shears that are ergonomically designed to help prevent carpal tunnel and tendonitis. As she demonstrated the shears and gave me her speil, we both kept mentioning various places or events that we could have known each other from. To make a long story short, neither one of us could remember. Is that weird or what? I know her from somewhere and it has been driving me crazy all week. I liked the shears, they came with a free pair of thinning shears, the price was right, so I bought them. Well, later that evening I began to wonder if she said all that just to build a rapport with me so I would make a purchase. Am I being overly suspicious ? Who knows? I need to call her because the shears aren't cutting as well I would like. Do you think I've been ripped off?

It's cold here in the Lone Star State! Winter has finally arrived. I can still wear my boots and leather jacket. I may even get to wear my hats (not western) this week. I have a black felt that looks more like a Zorro hat and a brown felt trimmed with a cheetah print band. The rodeo is coming up soon and it's always cold as heck during the chili cook-off. I'm not a 'kicker', but just about everyone 'goes Texan' during rodeo time. It's fun to drag out the western duds.

The entire city is consumed with The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Lots of money being spent and partying going on!


Yee Haw, Ya'll!

I took Elvis to the vet today for his check up and shots. Several of my friends recommended her to me. We loved her and her staff. Her office is in an old house that has been renovated. It is located down a country road on some acreage with barns. There was another cute country house near by. It looks like she lives there on the property. It was obvious that she loves animals. There were bird houses and feeders in the yard. My kind of place!

I watched American Idol tonight. They are down to 12 guys and 12 girls. Looks like a pretty good mix of talent. I know a lot of it is a bunch of hype, but I still like to watch it. Besides, Ryan Seacrest is such a cutie.

Well, I'm glad Valentine's day is over. It was just another day around here. I worked until 7:00, then came home and ate left over pizza from lunch. The man must have eaten a sandwich or something. The atmosphere was obviously not romantic....no further comment.
Oh well, he's probably relieved that he's 'off the hook' as far as doing anything for holidays is concerned.

We talk about the dog and that's about it, because I just don't have the energy or inclination to even try to discuss any real issues. We both know the score anyway, so what's the use?
Nothing will change and I just get even more upset. It's a waste of energy! I'm afraid I have become rather cynical about matters of the heart. How sad!
I need to concentrate my energy in a more useful way, such as getting all my tax stuff ready, then working on getting the house ready for my daughter and her family when they come to visit at the end of March.

Full Moon

I went out early this morning, about 6:45, to fill my bird feeders. As I glanced to the west the moon was setting behind the trees. I took one picture with the night setting, the second with the landscape setting. I like the foggy effect, but I don't know how it happened. The sky was clear but it looks kind of eerie, doesn't it? After the full moon rose last night the wind died down with the temperature about 28-30 degrees. I'm sure the deer were out and about, but this city gal wasn't about to go traipsing out in the woods to see what the wild life were up to. I leave that stuff up to my redneck son!

A Cold Day in Texas

There was a white blanket of frost on the ground this morning when I got up to make coffee. I decided to stay in because it was also very windy and I am still not completely over 'the crud'. In fact, my ears were aching last night. Guess I should have gone to the doctor when I first got sick..I would probably be over it by now. Oh well!

As I was reading 'Soul Retreats for Women' today, I came a cross this little gem:

Philippians 4: 12-13 says; 'I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or want. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength'.

Yes, certain aspects of my life aren't they way I like, but whose is? I do have so many things to be thankful for. I have two wonderful children who have grown into fine young adults. They are both married to fine people and have given me five beautiful grandchildren between them. I am healthy, my children and grandchildren are healthy. I have a great career, many sweet friends and associates. I have two loving sisters and a 'baby' brother whom I adore and who adore me.
The list goes on, as I begin to think about all that I do have. I really must try to ignore what might be and learn to appreciate life....just as it is. God will work out the rest!

It is dark now and there is a beautiful full moon, the wind has died down. I'm going to go play with Elvis, who by the way, is another sweet blessing in my life these days.

I went to a fund raising event Thursday night held by a local boutique called Fancy Pants. There was a fashion show, silent auction and raffle, all to help raise funds for The Rose, a breast cancer screening and treatment clinic for economically disadvantaged women. The models were all cancer survivors. How inspiring it was to see these women and hear their stories. They were all so beautiful and positive, truly alive and vibrant! $20,000.00 was raised for The Rose! There were many more cancer survivors in the audience and a good time was had by all!

Other that attending this event, all I did was work and take care of Elvis. He knows when I put up the baby gate that I am about to leave for work. Smart pup!

The world of hair was fairly busy, but rather routine this week. I wasn't booked solid all week, but that was OK. I had a few hours to kill on Tuesday, so I went to Ross and looked around. I found a neat black bag with hot pink lining for $19.99. Like I needed another bag, but the price was right and I loved the hot pink lining! I could even put Elvis in it and carry him around, ( not!). On Wednesday after I got my nails done I went to Stein Mart. I was looking for a black skirt or pants to go with the top I wanted to wear to the Fancy pants affair. I tried on several things and nothing was working. Then I found a sale rack full of black pants and gauchos. I tried on a pair of the gauchos and thought they would go perfect with my black boots. Plus they were an extra 30% off the marked down price! Bingo!
I finished off my outfit with a black beaded necklace, earrings and bracelets.

The weather is cold and windy! It is supposed to freeze tonight and be windy and cold again tomorrow. Brrr, maybe we are going to get a little winter here in south Texas after all. I need to go put some of my plants on the back porch and cover them.

This has been quite a week. I have been sick with a bad cold and sinus infection, but still managed to work. My clients don't seem to mind if I'm sick, as long as I show up and do their hair. I take a big dose of Day-Quil and keep on going...then go home and crash. That's not so easy to do any more though, since I have Elvis. He is always happy to see me, greeting me with sweet puppy kisses. We have to spend a little bonding time after being apart all day. He does light up the place! I wait until he is napping, then sneak in to check my e-mail and blog.
We went to Petco this afternoon to buy a harness and leash. I found a cute little red sweater, but Elvis hated it. He tried to back out of it . So, I guess he'll just have to shiver in the cold when he goes outside to potty. He freaked when we tried the harness and leash, too. What a rebel!
I so don't want to become an obsessed dog mommy, but this guy is so adorable that it's hard not to. I just love him to pieces!
OK, I'll stop now with the doggy talk. My son came in town today to watch the super bowl with his dad. He's staying with my brother tonight so they can party. The two of them have always been very close since my brother lived with us when my kids were little. In fact, they are more like brothers instead of uncle and nephew.
Since I have no social life with the man, I'll make my own plans with my family and my son tomorrow. Elvis and I will find ourselves a party somewhere!

And one more thing, all the Katrina criminals wreaking havoc in our city need to be rounded up and sent back to their crime ridden chocolate city!

Elvis & Me

I'm into day 3 with Elvis. He went to work with me yesterday because I didn't want to leave him alone yet. Of course, everyone thought he was adorable.
I have been in all day today trying to get over a cold and sore throat. Elvis woke me up at 6:00 am this morning, so out we go to 'potty'. Then back in to have breakfast and play a while before taking a morning nap. Just like old times, I think, only this baby doesn't wear diapers. And guess where he sleeps? I said I'd never allow a dog in my bed, much less on my pillow, but this little weenie dog ends up practically wrapped around my neck before the night is over! Oh no, I've been suckered in.. I'm a dog mommy! I'm even talking baby talk to him! He is sitting on my lap at this very moment, taking a snooze.
A strange thing has happened since Elvis has been here. I didn't tell the man that I had gotten a puppy because I just knew he would gripe. When he came home from work Monday afternoon, Elvis and I were out in the backyard. I was pleasantly surprised to see a smile on his face when he came out to see this cute little puppy frolicking about. Needless to say, he was smitten. Elvis ran to him and won him over with a sniff and a smile! The ice was cracked a little, and as we watched little Elvis play I recounted the story of how my son and I located him and his brother Marty. Later after we came in the house the two of them were in the floor playing!
Hmmmm, what to think?

Marty stayed in Dallas with my son and Elvis came home to Houston with me. When I saw my little guy, it was love at first sight! He rode all the way home snuggled up in my lap.
I gave him this teddy bear so he wouldn't miss Marty so much. Too cute!

It just burns me up when someone calls and begs me to come in early to cut their hair (8:45 am) and then shows up at 5 minutes after 9! I had another client coming in at 9:30. Anyway, I think she could tell I was a wee bit miffed, so she mumbled some lame excuse and then asked me if I had time to wax her lip and eyebrows! Being the true professional that I am, I regained my composure and proceeded to cut/style her hair and perform the wax job, running only 10 minutes behind schedule. The rest of the day was smooth sailing. i'm off tomorrow, Yay!
I'm getting out of town, heading north on I-45 northeast of Big D to visit my 'redneck' son and his family. I call him redneck affectionately. He know he's one...he likes being a bubba. The boy hunts hogs and other varmints, fishes, all that nasty stuff. He can bar-b-que like no body's business. We like to get in the kitchen together and cook us up some groceries. It's fun getting away and relaxing in the country with my youngun's!
And no, the man won't be accompanying me, either. It's a shame that it has come to this, but I have valid reasons why. Maybe someday I can talk more about it, but not yet.

What a wonderful, ugly day I had! It was cloudy, rainy and damp, just like I had hoped for, a perfect day to stay home, braless and make-up-less. I did have to make a run to the beauty supply, sans make-up, even. It takes a lot of guts for me to leave the house bare faced.
I read a few blogs today, while I was goofing off in between loads of laundry. Blogging seems to be a big thing with the 30 something crowd. I can tell by the content of the blogs even when they don't give their age. Not that age is an issue, I'm just making an observation. Some of the blogs are so creatively done....very interesting, witty and funny. I even made a few comments here and there.
So, hey, are there any 'Seasoned Women' out there in bloggerland? Let me hear from some of you boomer babes...you know who you are...I know you're out there! Ok, here's a clue...does anybody remember Woodstock? Who was your favorite Beatle? Guess what! He's still rockin'!
Mick's still struttin'. I saw Neal Diamond on Oprah today, even though he never was a fave of mine, he's still got it goin' on.

Wow! It's been a week since I've written to you, dear blog! Mainly because all I did was work five days in a row and come home every evening and vegetate. Lotsa hair cuttin' & colorin' = lotsa money, though, so it was worth it. Besides, what else am I going to do all day? Shop ? Clean house ? Put away Christmas decorations? Speaking of which I have been diligently working on all afternoon.
Anyway, back to the world of hair, I so love what I do! It was nice to see Georgia on Friday. She went and had her port inserted so she can start chemo this coming week. Her PET scan came back clean, so that was definitely a praise. She continues to be positive and upbeat.
My college girls have all gone back to school, freshly highlighted and trimmed. My teachers are back in their classrooms. Bless their hearts, I don't see how they do it. I mean, putting up with all the mess they have to deal with every day. I do hear some tales! Sounds like there are a lot of parents out there who don't have a clue, because their kids are totally out of control and they expect the teachers and administrators to teach the little creeps while refraining from any sort of discipline. I could go on, but I'm afraid any further comments would definitely be 'politically incorrect'!
Someday I MUST get started on my book.....'Tales from the World of Hair', or something! I know, I could call it 'Hairy Tales...a day in the life of your hairdresser'. I would have to 'change the names to protect the innocent, or not so innocent', in some cases. LOL!
My son called me today to invite me to a birthday party for his youngest boy. So, I'll be heading north on I-45 in a few weeks to the Dallas area. It will be nice to see him and his little family. I haven't seen them this since the summer. He and his wife have blessed me with three precious grand children.....two boys and a sweet little baby girl. Can't wait to play Memaw for a few days! My Ex and his wifey will be there with their two adopted little boys. That ought to make for a lively weekend! We get along OK, but he sure stares at me a lot. Wonder if she notices? Note to self: Wear new DKNY jeans, black western boots, black sweater and lots of silver jewelry. I think I need a new fragrance, too! Meow!!
I'm off on Monday's, but tomorrow is MLK Day, (no comment), so that probably means that the bank and post office will be closed. Won't be going downtown to the parade or participating in any of the festivities , though, so I guess I'll just stay home and get caught up with my laundry while I finish packing up Christmas. It's been kind of chilly, cloudy and windy today. Maybe it will rain tomorrow. I love to stay home when it rains and putter around the house. I call it 'having an ugly day', meaning no make-up, no bra, just sweats, a t-shirt and fluffly house shoes all day long. So, does anyone out there know what I'm talking about? What do you call it when you stay home and goof off/putter all day?

BYE, BYE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

I started dismantling the Christmas decorations today. It's kind of like a right of passage, the taking down and putting away. It seems to symbolize the putting away of the old year while getting ready for the new year. As I carefully handle the delicate glass icicles and balls, I reminisce about the past year. I will have to say that 2005 wasn't one of my better years, but being the optimist that I am, surely 2006 will be better. At least we didn't get blown away during the hurricane (Rita). So many folks in east Texas and Louisiana were devastated, but most of the Greater Houston area was spared. On a more personal level, however, I do feel like 2006 will be a turning point. Time will tell.
Anyway, back to the un-decorating, I have stopped for the night. The rest will have to wait until my next day off. Hopefully, I will have it done by Valentine's day! Speaking of which, can you believe the stores already have their Valentine displays up? Talk about overkill! By the time the day finally gets here, we will be sick of it. I'm not doing Valentine's Day anyway, Stupid little cupid, stay away from me!! Love sucks!!
I am so busy this week in the world of hair! I'm booked solid tomorrow and will even work some on Wednesday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are filling up fast, too. It's always this way when I take a vacation, but I don't mind. I actually like being busy and making lots of money!
I went to Wal-Mart today, which I hate to do. I needed some birdseed and other stuff, so I forced myself to go in. That place drives me crazy! You have to walk all over the friggin' place to find the items you need and end up buying all kinds of junk you didn't need or intend to buy. I ended up spending $100.00.
Well, I did buy a few groceries, but still...... it's a conspiracy!!
The man is still keeping his distance, or maybe I'm keeping my distance. We're kind of like two cats, circling and squaring off. Neither one wants to make the first move, because when that happens the fur will surely fly and somebody might get hurt! Or, he stays in his territory and I stay in mine and 'never the twain shall meet'. What a trip!

I came home after church and started reading the paper, and there it was on the back page.....A huge Foley's add with a 15% off coupon! Well, I was already in a 'mood' because I didn't have anything decent to wear to church earlier, so I thought I'd put that coupon to good use. Besides, the sun was shining, it was simply to gorgeous a day to stay in and dismantle Christmas decorations, sooooo...off I went...to the mall to experience a little retail therapy. I have been needing some new boots, so I headed straight for the shoe department. I love the new boot styles, especially the western ones. First I tried on a chunky brown pair with a neat buckle accent (on sale). Then I spotted a cute pointy toed pair in black suede with western cut out designs and silver studs on the sides ( on sale, as well). Tried them on and looooved them. What a dilemma...to find two pair of boots that both fit well and are on sale plus another 15 % off! Yep, I bought them both. I knew if I didn't that I would have 'buyers regret' later.
I saved so much on the boots that I thought I'd go look at clothes. I found a pair of brown knit gauchos and a camel colored sweater (on sale) that will go great with the brown boots. Then, on to the accessories where I found a cute little bronze leather purse and a brown belt with a silver buckle (on sale) . The 15 % off coupon can be re-used with each purchase of sale marked merchandise, so I save a bunch of dollars today!
Church was awesome this morning. I even went back for the evening service, something I rarely do. I needed to just 'worship' today and forget the cares of this world. I know that God will direct me in the way I need to go in making some major personal decisions if I just give it to Him. He has already told me to 'just be', to live each day in peace and joy, and trust Him to handle the gory details.

Me and Fairy Godmother!!

I had so much fun in the Florida sun, ya'll! Even my flights there and back were smooth, with beautiful weather and calm skies. The first few days the girls and I got up early and went shopping at our favorite stores in Lakeland. On day one we went toTarget, Marshall's and the new Kohl's, then stopped at Starbuck's. Day two we headed for the mall and made the rounds there. Found some good bargains, too! I was suprised that there was anything left after Christmas. I found a great pair of DKNY jeans for 40% off at Macy's and some cheetah print flannel sheets at Kohl's for 50% off. The girls had fun spending their Christmas money at The Children's Place, Old Navy and Bath & Body Works.
We got up really early Friday morning and went to Disney World. We started out at Magic Kingdom with the Cinderellabration. Son-in-law ran into a friend who works at Disney and he arranged for us to have a private session with Cinderella, Fairy Godmother and all the princesses from other Disney films. They were all breathtakingly beautiful, but I especially loved meeting Fairy Godmother. The grand daughters were awestruck, to say the least. We took lots of pictures, so I'll share some as soon as I get them all downloaded and organized.
After all that excitement, we made our way to Space Mountain. It was a fun ride, but I did get a little queasy!
After lunch we checked out the Rockin' Roller Coaster at MGM. The line was really long, but daughter and one of the girls wanted to ride, so we stood in line for TWO hours. I figured since Space Mountain didn't do me in that I could stand this one....WRONG! Scared the heck out of me! I was in the last car by myself with the two girls in the car ahead of me, screaming my head off and getting jerked all over the place. All I can say is I'm glad they have a bathroom right out side the exit!! Oh yes, and the ride lasted for maybe 60 seconds!
I wasn't about to try the Tower of Terror after that, besides, I had ridden it last time we were there. We then went went to the Philharmagic 3-D movie, which was really cool, a preview of the Chronicles of Narnia and then on to The Fantasmic show which was utterly amazing.
I love it! Can't wait to go back!
We all slept in the next morning, but then had to get up and get ready for New Years Eve! We made velveeta cheese dip, spinach dip, hot dogs 'n chili, etc, etc. We played board games while we snacked and waited for midnight. Son in law made a bon fire down by the lake and popped fireworks.
Those kids go non stop all the time, but I love trying to keep up with them and getting in on the fun!
So,.....Time to get back to the world of hair tomorrow. I'm booked solid, but at least I have lots of 'new material' to share with my clients. They will love it when I tell them I met my Fairy Godmother in person!

I am packing my bag, ya'll! My flight to Florida departs early tomorrow morning. I travel light, with just a carry on bag and backpack purse. I also check in online and print out my boarding pass, so I can just sail on through to the gate. I still like to arrive at the airport an hour or so before boarding time because it gives me time to unwind and 'psyche' myself up for the flight. Did I mention that I DON'T like to fly?? Even though I have made the flight to Tampa many times, I still get a little nervous. I like to people watch, too...I wonder where everyone's going. I wonder if some folks, mainly females, look in the mirror before they leave the house, especially the view from the rear? Meow, I'm getting catty now, so I'll just move on!
Well, the last of the Christmas 'mess' in my kitchen has been cleaned up and put away. I went over to my sister's after I finished and visited with her for a while. She was washing and putting away all her Christmas dishes, so I helped her dry and we had a nice chat while we worked. We always seem to want to spend a little extra time together when either of us is going on a trip.
I kind of 'spilled my guts' to her about my 'domestic predicament'. Of course, she already knows the story, but is always ready to listen when I need to vent or need another perspective. She and her husband, who is like a brother to me, are so supportive and encouraging to me. I know they will be there for me, no matter what. They are such a blessing to me! Thank you Lord, for my sweet sister.
I will be so busy while I am on vacation, as we are going to see Mickey and Minnie and whatever else we can think of. You know? Like shopping, eating out , shopping and eating out some more! I won't be posting while I'm gone, but I'm sure I will have plenty of exciting stuff to talk about when I return.

Oh my goodness, ya'll, my pork roast and sausage/apple stuffing was delicious, if I do say so myself! Sister and nieces were equally impressed, also. After dessert, we opened gifts. They gave me a beautiful ceramic cross/tea light holder. The girls loved the things I gave them.
We all went to my other sister's house later for MORE dessert and gift exchanging. I do love being with my sisters and nieces, but there's always an empty spot since Mom is no longer with us, and of course, my daughter and her family rarely get to be here at the holidays. My daughter called while we were all sitting around the table and I held the phone out so everyone could tell her hello. She misses her family so much! Hopefully, she and the girls can come out this summer.
Well, I'm glad Christmas is over for another year. There were times when I didn't think I would make it through, but I just kept my mind on the 'reason for the season' and carried on with all the preparations. My decorations were all beautiful, the food was wonderful, the shopping was fun, performing in the Christmas pageant at church was fun, even working myself half to death in the world of hair was fun. But, even as I went through the motions, there was always this feeling of emptiness in the background, of something missing. It's funny how one can be surrounded by people and all the 'busyness' of the season, yet be so alone. It goes without saying that I miss my kids and their families being in town, especially for holidays and special occasions. However, I know what is 'missing' and I must face the cold, hard reality that it is gone, gone, gone, never to be found again! I truly believed that we could make it work....now my hope is fading fast. Lord, what am I to do? I can't let him destroy me!
Oh boy, did I get down in the dumps, or what? I will be joyful, I will be joyful, I will be joyful!

First thing this morning I made chocolate chip cookies. It's Christmas eve, afterall, and one MUST make cookies on Christmas eve. As I went about mixing the batter, I thought of all the times I made Christmas cookies with my kids when the were little. We made decorated sugar cookies, red and white candy canes and spritz. For the candy cane cookies, color half of the dough red and leave the other half plain, roll out one of each, twist them together, shape like a candy cane and bake. I wondered at the time why I bothered with the whole mess, but apparently the tradition 'stuck' with then. So, guess what they were both doing when I called today? Making cookies! Daughter was making iced snowflakes and bells, Son was making gingerbread men and sugar cookies. They both are good cooks, too. I taught them well!
The weather is absolutely glorious today, so I went for a walk in the woods out back. I found lots of yaupon holly with red berries, pine branches and pine cones. I brought it all back and made a large freeform arrangement for the table on the back porch. I took a rustic wooden angel and placed her in the midst of the greens. I filled a weathered, old basket with pinecones. Lovely, I must say!
I saw lots of deer and raccoon tracks! I would like to go out later in the evening to see if I can spot them, but I'm afraid to go alone. Spooky!
I will be busy, busy tomorrow, preparing my Christmas dinner, then spending the afternoon with my sisters and their families.

I am so looking forward to my vacation! I have been so busy at work this week and I am just tired of the whole world of hair! Most of my clients are wonderful, but there are those who do try my patience. I had one in the salon today....I can't even find the words to describe the whole ordeal. Wait..the words are coming to me! Are you ready? Teenage son of a friend of mine, who dyed his hair blue/black and wanted it corrected back to his natural color ( medium brown) before he went back to his 'alternative school'. Can I say 'pain in the posterior'? End of story!
Talked to daughter this morning. We are both getting all excited about our visit. I miss her and my sweet grand daughters so much! I wish I had stayed there with them and not come back here! There, I said it and I feel so much better. I hope she and I can finally talk about everything that has transpired in the last two years. I think the hurts have healed enough that we can have a heart to heart chat. She means more to me that any one, but I feel like have failed her in so many ways over the years. Ah, the mother/daughter relationship is rife with pain and heartache at times, but it is also the sweetest bond two females can share. She will always be my 'Baby Bumble Bee'! My heart swells with love and anticipation as I look forward to smelling her sweetness when I give her a great big hug! Her two sweet little girls are the icing on the cake, a beautiful extension of her. What was I thinking when I left them and came back? That's another story, for another time. Right now, I am just looking forward to shopping, doing lunch and playing with 'MY GIRLS'
Christmas is almost here and I am ready, set, go! I can't wait to make my delicious dinner of Roast Pork, Sausage & Apple stuffing and all the trimmings!

Hey Ya'll, I'm finished with my Christmas shopping. Today was my last opportunity to get it done. But first, I had to get my nails done and wouldn't you just know, my girl was running almost 30 minutes behind?? Her first appointment was late, which made her late, etc,etc. Arghhh! Being in the 'beauty biz' meself, I know what a bummer it is when your first client of the day is late. It throws you off the entire day, or at least until you somehow manage to catch up, which usually means you get to skip eating or taking a potty break. Since I got off on this tangent, you know what else bums me out? When I get to the shop early, so I can fix my hair, start the towels, get the place ready for the day, check my voice mail, return calls, tinkle, etc, etc, etc...my first client beats me there, is sitting in the car waiting, follows me in and says, 'Oh, I know I'm early, go ahead and do your thing' then proceeds to follow me around talking to me. I know they love me so much they can't wait to see me, but I really need a few minutes to gather my thoughts and get ready for my day. The moral of this story? If you arrive earlier than your scheduled appointment time, please have a seat in the reception area, unless your stylist invites you to 'come on back'. You never know, she/he may be trying to recover from a stressful morning commute and probably needs a little time to calm down before attacking your hair!
Ok...Now where was I? Oh, I was all excited about getting an early start with my shopping, but it was almost 11:30 before I got to Sam's Club. I don't like to buy groceries at Sam's because of buying in bulk, but I was looking for a pork roast and a few other holiday goodies. I did find a nice hunk of pork and a beautiful cheesecake assortment, plus artichoke cheese dip, smoked salmon, chips and mixed nuts. The man likes to go to the grocery store, so he'll go Krogering tomorrow evening and get the rest of the things I need for Christmas dinner. I must say he has been extra nice lately. I still feel the need to keep my distance, though, because I know his MO.
I ran across an interesting blog today. It's called 'Look Who's Tattling Now'. Makes me wonder about my nieces being on the internet. I think they have blogs on Xanga and Myspace. Hope they don't get into any weird stuff. It's too bad that there are so many predators and perverts out there preying on our teenagers.
I saw a story about internet perverts on Dateline the other night. A lot of the guys they busted are professionals: ie, doctors, lawyers, rabbis, teachers. What sad, pathetic creeps!!
Well, I've ranted enough for one evening, so I'll go kick back and get ready for another day in the world of hair tomorrow. I'm 'slammed' ( booked solid). Can't wait to see what the day brings. I'll let you know if I hear anything exciting!

Texas weather is crazy! Today was an absolutely beautiful, sunny winter day. Not a cloud in the sky, after yesterdays' downpour.
When I went out to check my bird feeder early this morning, I looked to the west and saw a big, full moon setting just above the trees. I ran back in the house, grabbed my camera and took a few pictures of it as it went down. It looked awesome! I'll have to wait til tomorrow night to download them, 'cause I left my camera at work.
When I left work around 6:30, the moon was full and on the rise. Maybe I'll bundle up and go out on the back porch later and see if I can hear Mr. Owl. He may just be out on this clear, moon lit night. I haven't seen or heard from him in a while. I wonder if owl's migrate? I'll have to research my bird book and find out.
Yesterday was number one son's birthday. I called him early, but he was already in Dallas on the job. He has grown into a fine, young man. He works hard and takes good care of his family. I still pray that one day he will find a place in his life for the Lord. I try not to 'preach' to him about it, but every now and then I feel that I need to remind him of the importance and responsibility upon him, as a father, to teach his children about Jesus and the things of God...
Especially at this time of year, the Christmas season and celebration of Jesus birth.
I just talked to daughter in Florida. She has the sniffles, probably caught from her students! She was busy getting things ready for their Christmas party at school tomorrow. Granddaughter made a 'Happy Birthday Jesus' cake to take to her class party. I am so glad that they are in a Christian school, where their mommy teaches. I can hardly wait to see them!! I'm counting the days....I leave on Dec. 28th. I love, love, love being with MY GIRLS!

It has been raining all day long! I normally don't work on Wednesday, but went in to 'do' a few ladies. When I left the shop it was really coming down. I had to drive thru some high water in a few places so was glad I hadn't scheduled any more appointments. There's nothing worse than driving home in rush hour traffic in heavy rain with street flooding.
So, I arrived home safely, changed into my sweats and started a pot of chili. Then I remembered that I need to take a goodie to choir practice tonight. I found a package of brownie mix, stirred it up, threw in some extra chocolate chips and pecans and popped them into the oven. When they were done, I tossed a few more choc chips on top, let them melt and spread them out. Meanwhile, the chili is simmering and the kitchen is all warm and cozy, but
this weather makes me feel so blah! Puts me in a bad mood, too. Or maybe it's the atmosphere around here. This nice, new house feels so empty...I wonder why I came back.
Think I'll go take a nap.

Our girls night out/Christmas party was fun! We exchanged gifts first, then had ceviche and chile con queso, fajitas and FOUR kinds of desserts. Not to mention....drinks! The girls are so much fun. I am so blessed to work with such a fine group of ladies.
I did a new client today. I have seen her at church and spoken to her casually in passing many times. She recently found out from a friend ( a new client of mine) that I am a hairdresser and called me for an appointment. She recognized my daughter's picture and come to find out, they went to the same high school and graduated the same year. She liked her hair, too! I love it! I have so much fun at work every day! Each day brings something new. I never get bored, that's for sure.
It's almost time for Boston Legal! I have really gotten into that show. James Spader and William Shatner are such a case! I'm gonna go get comfy in front of the TV now.

I was so glad to see the sun when I went to the kitchen to make coffee this morning! I woke up later than usual...a little too late to go to church. I probably could have made it to the late service, but I must confess, I went to the mall instead. I still needed to buy a few more Christmas presents and my sister's birthday present. Foley's had their usual 15% off coupons in the paper, so off I went. I bought sweaters and gloves and a pretty Christmas pin.
My 'room mate' friend invited me to go to her grand daughter's dance recital this afternoon. I finished my shopping and met up with her. I enjoyed watching the girls perform, especially the little ones. They are so cute in their pink tutus!
I stopped by Stein Mart on the way home and found a beautiful Christmas tablecloth and some pretty gold coasters. I love Stein Mart, ya'll!
I hope it is sunny again tomorrow. I have to go to the grocery store. Yuck! It is such a chore, however it is a little more pleasant this time of year because all the holiday goodies are out.
We are having our salon Christmas party tomorrow night at Pappasito's. Just the five of us...no husbands or kids. We'll exchange gifts, eat, gossip about our clients and enjoy being 'lose' on the town. Yeah, like we're that wild! Three of the girls have young children and the resident youngster is single. My kids are grown, of course. I'm sure we'll all make it until about 9:00 pm, then call it a night. Besides, I have a long day on Tuesday. I'll wear my new black sweater with the faux fur collar and sparkly snowflake pin with my French Dressing jeans. Found the sweater at Kohl's (on sale, of course) Saturday on the way home from work. My black bangle sequin purse (found at Harwin last week) will be 'the icing'!
I need to wrap his up and go surf foodnetwork or cooks.com and find a recipe for sausage & apple stuffing.
I wonder if anyone reads these blogs? I enjoy reading a few now and then, but rarely comment on any. I'm still learning how to navigate the whole process, so I haven't figured out how to do links yet. Oh well, I enjoy journaling my thoughts even if no one else reads it.
Think I'll read a few before I look for recipes!

As I was getting ready for my 11:30 perm, I heard the loud bang of vehicles hitting each other. A guy in the reception area saw the accident as it happened. So we all ran to the window to see how bad it was. Yep, it was my lady! Poor thing was trying to make a left turn into the parking lot and was almost in when when a pick-up plowed into her right rear fender, spinning her around in the opposite direction. She's in her late 70's so we called the paramedics to come check her out. But guess who got there first? The wreckers! Those guys have their own radar, for sure. Poor little thing was pretty shaken up, but not hurt, thank God. Needless to say, she didn't feel like getting a perm. The cops came, the wreckers drivers flipped to see who got to tow the vehicles and we went on with our day.
The 'hot topic' these days seems to be over the controversy of replacing Christmas with 'holiday'. It IS Christmas that we celebrate on Dec. 25th isn't it? It's always been called Christmas because it Jesus Christ's birthday that we are celebrating. We don't celebrate 'winter' as in 'Winter Holidays' ( That's what the schools call it now). I know there are other religions and customs and that not everyone believes in Jesus Christ and that's OK with me. I would never try to change their traditions and customs, so why are they trying to force me, a Christian, to change mine ? We used to have Christmas parties at school, now we have to call them 'holiday' parties.
Christmas cards, Christmas shopping, Christmas cookies, Christmas candy, Christmas stockings, Christmas trees, Christmas lights, Christmas carols, Christmas decorations, Christmas wreaths, Christmas parties, Christmas eve candle light services, Christmas gifts, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas!!!!!!!
It's a Christian holiday, OK?? It's Christmas to me and I will wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

PS I like Santa Claus, too, but he's not the reason we celebrate.

Well, what can I say? My client came in today at her usual time, 10:30 am. Her surgery is scheduled for Monday morning. She seemed to be in good spirits. She said she plans on keeping her December 23 appointment. I pray that all goes well for her in the next two weeks.
Other than that, it was just another routine day in the world of hair. I was tired all day...my ears still feel stopped up and my head hurt. I was glad my last appointment re-scheduled until Tuesday. I just wanted to get home and crash!
I vegged on the couch and watched 'Trauma-Life in the ER'. Memorial Hermann in Houston was featured on this episode. How cool is that? I don't know why I watch that gross stuff, but it was neat to see my hometown med center on TV.
The man came home shortly after I arrived. I fixed something to eat, we ate in silence, then he retired to his room. Silence can be so loud sometimes, especially when there is nothing left to say. He did mention that he didn't feel well... I think he's got 'the crud'. I don't know what else to say, so I just mumble a quiet 'good night'. It's emotionally exhausting!
Thank God tomorrow is Saturday! I have to be at work early, so I'm calling it a night.

What a busy day I had! I just love it, though! Everyone is in a festive mood because of Christmas, getting ready for parties, shopping and all the other activities pertaining to the holiday. And of course, they bring me gifts! One of my ladies brought me some chocolate truffles and fudge. Just yesterday someone brought Hershey's dark chocolate with almonds. My 'girls' know what I like! I also get lots of candles, bath and body products and extra cash, etc.
I am so blessed to have such a loyal, generous clientele. I make every effort to accommodate and take care of each and every one throughout the year. Many are long time friends, some are almost like family. Each one holds a special place in my heart. One of my dearest 'weekly' ladies was diagnosed with colon cancer last week. I knew she had not been feeling well and had undergone tests. I could tell when she walked in the door last Friday that it wasn't good news. When she told me, we hugged and cried. She will be in tomorrow morning, but will be having surgery the following week. Then they will get her on a course of treatment. I guess that means chemo, which usually means hair loss. I hate it!! She's the second one in the last six months to get cancer. I still miss seeing her every Thursday at 11:00. It seems weird to book someone else in her place. I wonder how she is doing or if she is still with us. She chose not to undergo chemo and moved back to Louisiana to be with her family. I'm sure they were affected by the hurricanes, but I have no way of knowing. All I can do is pray that they are OK.
Makes me realize how precious life is.
It was very cold this morning. I didn't see many birds...just a red tailed hawk and the little greenish bird that sits on the fence every morning waiting for a grasshopper to pounce upon. There was a light frost last night and it will be cold again tonight. All the bugs will freeze, too! I think I'll get some suet cakes and fresh seed to put out this weekend. I did see the American kestrel and blue birds recently, but they have been keeping a low profile since it got really cold. Yesterday morning I saw a neat looking little bird, so I went and looked him up in my book. It was a song sparrow. They are prettier than an ordinary house sparrow.
Birds are so cool to watch! They are truly some of God's most beautiful and intriguing creatures. I am continually amazed at His wonderful creation and the way He orchestrated nature. We should all be good stewards of this earthly environment He has given us. It makes me sad when I see the trees clear cut, just to develop more, more, more! Progress is good, I suppose, but why cut ALL the trees down! Oops, I'm starting to preach now, so I'll just stop before I get too riled up.
It's getting late and I have another long day tomorrow in the world of hair.
I'm gonna go get comfy and watch a little TV before I call it a night.

What a busy weekend! Christmas pageant went very well. We played to a packed house Saturday and Sunday night...To 'rave' reviews, I might add. What a celebration of our Lord Jesus' birth! We will sing Christmas songs and carols every Sunday until Christmas, then have a Christmas eve candlelight service. What a beautiful time of year! I think I am finally in the mood! I choose to be joyful, no matter what!
The man is still keeping his distance, which works fine for me right now.
I spent most of the day finishing my Christmas tree and mantel. I made a new wreath for the front door, too. I still need to decorate the buffet in the dining area and maybe add a few festive touches in the bedrooms and bathrooms.
Baby sister and I made a menu for our Christmas day dinner. I wanted to do something different than turkey or ham, so here's the menu:
Pork roast
Sausage & apple stuffing
Sweet potato balls ( I didn't get around to making these for Thanksgiving )
Fresh green beans
Corn casserole
Assorted desserts
Now I need to find a good recipe for the stuffing as I have never made it before. Any suggestions? We always have 'regulation' cornbread dressing/stuffing.
Tomorrow is another day in the world of hair. I am booked solid all week! Everyone wants to get beautiful for the holiday festivities and parties. It will be this way for the next three weeks which is fine with me. I will be off for over a week when I go to Florida, so I need to make lot's of money while I can. I won't be back to work until January 6th, 2006. Wow, where has the time gone? I remember going to Fla for Y-2K. I wanted to be with my daughter just in case something weird happened.
The weather has finally turned cold here in south Texas, so that should help everyone get in the Christmas shopping mood, I suppose. The weather guys always start speculating about a possible white Christmas at the first cold snap. I think I just heard him say it might freeze tonight! My friend and I are still planning on going shopping this Wednesday to Harwin. It's going to be really cold..In the 30's! Brrrrr! I've already been wearing my gloves while driving. I don't think I could take the cold up north, or even Dallas for that matter! I would surely freeze to death!
Think I'll go work on the buffet decorations.
